We are excited to welcome Blu Dot Farm & Vineyard to the Petoskey Wine Region! Celebrating their first year in business, this Charlevoix vineyard has so much to offer. Their estate vineyard spans approximately 8 acres, adorned with 5,000 vines. Every individual vine receives meticulous care throughout its growth stages. Extensive vineyard walks are conducted to ensure the well-being of their vines. It is considered the most serene location on the farm.
History
The main barn at Blu Dot Farm dates back to the late 1800s, originally part of an asparagus farm stretching beyond the Charlevoix Rod & Gun Club to around See Road. Relics of the property’s agricultural past remain, with asparagus still thriving along the fence line near the bike path. Legend has it that Blu Dot Farm earned its name from the young son of the asparagus farmer, whose first word was “Blue.”
In the mid-60s, the property transitioned to breeding and training Standardbred Harness-Racing horses. During this period, the primary residence, horse stables, a half-mile race track, and additional barns were erected, preserving the legacy of Blu Dot Farm.
In 2018, the current owners acquired 20 acres of the property to cultivate grapes and craft wine. The following year saw the planting of the first 3 acres of vines, marking the beginning of their viticultural journey. Subsequently, in 2020, an opportunity arose to purchase the neighboring farm, affectionately known as “Blu Dot Farm,” expanding their holdings to 50 acres and solidifying the perfect moniker for their wine venture.
The road to realizing their winemaking dream has been anything but easy. Each step requires dedication and perseverance, from the initial grape cultivation to establishing a tasting room. The journey traces back to 2006, when Paul and Jennie’s visit to Napa Valley sparked a love affair with the idea of owning a vineyard. Nearly a decade later, their exploration led them to realize that Northern Michigan offered an ideal environment for grape cultivation. After years of pursuit, the stars aligned, and their dream materialized with the acquisition of Blu Dot Farm.
Today, Blu Dot Farm is a testament to their unwavering commitment and passion for winemaking. With vines firmly rooted in the fertile soil of Northern Michigan, they eagerly embrace the challenges and rewards of nurturing grapes and crafting exceptional wines for all to enjoy. They express gratitude for their supportive wine community and friends who have offered listening ears and helping hands. The Vineyard
The Great Lakes and glacial drift directly influence the terroir at Blu Dot. The vineyard boasts significantly rocky, loamy soil, abundant nutrients for their vines, and remarkable fossils and Petoskey stones. These environmental factors contribute to the distinct mineral presence found in their white wines. Their estate vineyard currently nurtures six different varietals: Marquette, Itasca, Traminette, Frontenac Gris, Sauvignon Rytos, and Auxerrois, with plans for expansion in the upcoming year. With such a diverse lineup, enthusiasts can anticipate exceptional white blends from Blu Dot in the years ahead!
